Red River

SKU #RR
Availability: In Stock
Red River
  • Dark red, globe shaped, sweet, hybrid
  • Size Potential: 3-4"
  • Storage Potential: 3-5 months
  • Days to Harvest: 95-105

Red River is a highly adaptable onion variety that can be planted in both intermediate day and long day regions since it is considered a long "intermediate day" or a short "long day." For customers that remember our very popular variety called Mars, this is the red variety that we feel comes closest to that maturity slot, flavor, and size. This variety boasts a strong root system and a nice dark, red color. High yield potential and good storage potential. Resistant to pink root, fusarium, and bolting.

Good flavor but.................

I have grown Red River as well as other red onion varieties since Mars was discontinued. The flavor of Red River is decent but still not nearly as good as Mars. It also has not sized well for me here in South Central PA with a huge one being of tennis ball ( with few that big ). Other than Mars which grew to softball size for me the Red Zeppelin will get big here and store VERY well but is more pungent and I don't care for them for fresh eating. Of all the varieties I have grown in 30 plus years of gardening at this location Candy and Mars get a Blue Ribbon from me.

Great red onion that keeps well. They went well at the farmers market. I kept a laundry basket full. Harvested first of August and I have about 10 left now in February. good replacement for the Mars Onion you used to sell. Sweet and nice.Montague, California

Best Onion I've Ever Grown!

This is the best onion I have ever grown. I live in SE Coastal CT and these onions were large, very tasty, and stored well. I should have bought more than I did because once we tasted how good they were we finished eating the row we planted by November 17th. I won't make the same mistake next year!

My Experience with Red River Onions
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Jul 21, 2014
I gave this onion a 4 just because I have not seen yet how the storage is on this onion but growing it was a breeze. I harvested a long row today and about 25% were on the very large size; 25% a pound or more and the rest about "store" size. Overall, I am happy with this onion and if it stores well will grow again next year.Adena, OH
