Mixture of CAN, SUP, RCA

We've made it easy for those who want to plant all three of our famous intermediate onion plant varieties, but may not have enough space to plant an entire bunch of each variety. Our Intermediate Day Sampler is a bundle of 50-75 onion plants that includes a mixture of Candy, Super Star, and Red Candy Apple onion varieties, providing a nice combination of color and flavor. The bunch may not have exactly 20 plants of each variety, but the bundle will have at least 50-75 plants. Seed is mixed at planting therefore, we cannot guarantee number of each variety.

Great Onions
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Jul 27, 2020
Great Onions. Every year I've planted short day bunches from HD. This year there was no selection at HD and I happened upon Dixondale Farms. Since we are in Maryland the intermediate looked like a good fit and they turned out great! Better than any of the short day sweet onions I've planted. All grew to nice sized bulbs and they are sweet! Also, I planted Shallots and they turned out great. The Candy onion is the sweetest but all turned out well. Now in the process of curing these onions and hoping they will last several months. Coming back next year for more. Laytonsville, Md

Planting for the 5th Year

I have grown these for the last 4 years. This one sampler provides me with enough onions to get me through till February. I have had no trouble with them. The white and red onions last me 4 to 5 months, and the yellow onions will last me till February if I cure and store them properly. I only get a few that are grocery store size, but they are the size I need for cooking. Nashville, Tn

Disappointing
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Jul 20, 2019
Overall, the sampler was disappointing. Onion plants arrived fine and grew well, but then, the problems started. Red Candy Apple didn't bulb here in Tennessee. They grew to about shallot size, but at least they didn't rot like the other two, either in the field or when curing. I will blame that on the rainy weather. I will keep looking for varieties that work better in my area.

Gigantic onions!

I just harvested my intermediate day sampler onions and I am so pleased! The onions were quite large, especially the white ones! I've always had trouble with my onions rotting, and even with the excessive amount of rain we've had this year in Kentucky, these onions soaked up the water and grew so big! Definitely ordering these again next year!

great onions

Very pleased with the onions. They have survived, and thrived after two hail storms, a cool, wet May and warm, humid June. I have picked a few for burgers and salads, wonderful flavor. The rest are about baseball sized and still growing. Looking forward to harvest.

Very happy with this collection
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Mar 6, 2019
We had an epic year with this collection in 2017. I'm not sure whether the stars aligned, or I gave them some extra lovin', but they were great. While this is an intermediate-day sampler, the collection grew successfully in Southeast Wyoming - high altitude - Zone 4B. There was snow up to the windowsills when the box arrived, so I waited 3 weeks to plant -- a good number of them still thrived. I went through each set and chose the largest, healthiest onions to plant in the field. I saved the scrawny ones, nubs and leftovers, clumped them together, and grew them as spring onions - a handful directly next to each drip hose water emitter. This was a nice way to salvage most of what I lost.

Copras
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Feb 10, 2018
I planted Copras last summer because my friend said they keep well. Boy was she right. My crop was really big and I am still using them in February. Granted we're down to the smallest one, but for them to keep well so long is very economical and amazing. I'll be sad when I have to start buying them from the grocery store again.

Good variety of onions
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Apr 24, 2017
A good variety of onions, and grow well in my part of Ky. Description says at least five dozen slips. What I ordered last year had 49. By my count that's four dozen plus one. I won't be ordering these any more.

I've been gardening for 35 years. I've tried onions over and over. Last year (honest) was going to be my last attempt. I ordered the "Intermediate Day Sampler"..... WOW! All of the Candy and Super Star onions grew as big is softballs. The Red Candy Apple about the size of baseballs, very delicious. Harvested in July....... It's now January, we still have onions (stored in the refrigerator in the garage). WOW! Salina, Kansas

Ordered the Intermediate Day Sampler so that we would have variety of onions. Been gardening for over thirty years and last summers crop of onions surpassed any crop I have ever grown. I tell EVERYONE about DIXONDALE FARMS' ONIONS.Smithfield, Va

These onions did very well in the Ranchitos valley; planted with a side dressing of bloodmeal; many were enormous and they taste wonderful; just like the kids in the previous review, the planting ended up haphazard because of our dogs running through and they still turned out great; leeks did great here too.Taos, NM

We have a community garden with a lot of kids planting and running through. Not only was the sampler kid friendly to plant they were kid friendly to pick. I couldn't believe how beautiful the onions were after being stuck in the ground haphazardly a few months before by a bunch of little hands. The flavor was incredible and Dixondale Farms is the only place we purchase onions from now.

Keeping in mind that these onions would not grow as big as advertised here in Massachusetts, I was not disappointed. This was an experiment that worked beyond expectations. Almost all onions were 3" plus and none bolted in spite of an a May that went from late winter temps to early summer. Will do this again next year.Needham, Ma

This was my first year with your onions and I'm hooked. Bought two intermediate day sampler bunches and I had a bumper crop to beat all. We harvested over 100 pounds of onions. Hesperus, Colorado

First time I've purchased from Dixondale. I am absolutely pleased with the results of my intermediate day sampler. 60 plants in the sampler? Um...I was well north of that. No complaint from me though. Outstanding taste, laudable size, and even having a cold snap late in the season, very few bolted. I'll be back next year for sure. Auburn, Ca

Last year was the first time I ordered your onion plants. The sample bunches were for myself and my neighbors. The plants themselves were the best I have ever received thru the mail. And after following your recommendations as closely as possible, we all agreed that these were the best looking, best tasting, onions we've ever grown. I highly recommend them. VIRGINIA

Intermediate Day Sampler
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Feb 17, 2010
Last year I ordered a bunch of First Edition and 1 bunch of Intermediate Day Sampler. The First Edition bunch was fine as usual, but with the Intermediate Day Sampler I received 1 Candy plant, 2 red onion plants and the rest were the flattened yellow onion I did not recognize. I am putting in an order this year and home that I get a better selection in my sampler.
