Southern Belle Red

Dixondale Farms exclusive hybrid. Sweeter, larger, and more bolt resistant!

  • Red, globe shape, sweet, hybrid
  • Size Potential: 4"
  • Storage Potential: Approximately 2 months
  • Days to Harvest: 110

Blushing deep red throughout, the Southern Belle is truly a beauty and sweet as well! Relish the sweet flavor and intense color of these delightful, flattened globe-shaped, ruby red bulbs on top of salads or to garnish any meal. Better uniformity, more disease and bolt resistance, and larger size potential than any other short day red variety. Let them cure properly to have exceptionally red rings that look great on salads. This is the sweetest red onion available for short day areas. We improved this variety to have more disease and bolting resistance. Because of their higher concentration of quercetins, red onions are also very healthy. Quercetin is a flavonoid—an antioxidant compound that helps delay or slow damage to cells and tissue of the body. Recent studies on its health effects suggest that quercetin may help fight diseases and disorders such as cataracts, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers. Southern Belle is an excellent choice for your health and your appetite. This onion is considered a mid to late short day variety.

We grew these and they actually did better than the 1015's. I liked them because they had more flavor than the Candy and 1015's. Nice color. I prefer these when cooking because they maintain some flavor. Alief, Texas

When I got these plants they looked a little small. However they produced large, beautiful sweet red onions that were a real hit with our customers. The color is deep red - purple and is a great addition to or farmer's market sales. One shopper who told me he doesn't really like onions came back and bought these week after week! They are delicious. Beaufort, SC

I was having trouble with them bolting also, I contacted Dixondale and was advised to plant a month earlier than I usually do. This year not one bolted, got 5"+ onions, best red onion I have ever ate!!!

Southern Belle Tops
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Jun 13, 2008
About 40% of my southern belles threw tops this year vs. almost none for the Contessas or Texas SS. They seem to throw more every year .
