You may be able to find a balanced fertilizer, but not one with the essential micronutrients that onions require for optimal bulb formation. Without magnesium, zinc, boron, copper, iron, manganese and molybdenum, plants will have slow growth, tip yellowing and twisting of leaves. The organic humic acids allow the slow release of nutrients into the soil and keep it nice and loose for large bulbs. After 3 weeks after planting, just start applications of 21-0-0 Ammonium Sulfate every 2-3 weeks to produce the largest onion crop in the neighborhood. Treats approximately 560 feet of row.

In the past I've found 10-20-10 to be the best fertlizer for all of my crops including corn and tomatoes especially. Last year I did a test of other fertilizers including Miracle-Gro on different garden patches. 10-20-10 produced the best crops yields grown under the exact same conditions. When tested on flowers it proved superior on them also. I'm sold on 10-20-10.

I've used many root crop ferts. This has given my plants the best results. Works great on garlic too.FISHERS, IN
