This long-day onion comes from Tropea, the Calabrian town in Italy well-known for its exquisite cooking and locally grown red onions. Also known as Lunga di Firenzi. Will require a slightly deeper planting (2") and more moisture to keep the bottom of the onion from becoming flattened by tight soil. In Italy, they braid 5-6 onions together and tie them on a nail for display.
The total price of your onion plant order will be determined at checkout. Pricing is based on the total number of bunches purchased (see chart to the left).

Lovely onion. I especially enjoy it in half inch slices sauteed in butter. Add some yellow squash and it's a light meal.

Very fun and exciting to grow. These caused quite a stir at the market last year, people were very drawn to the odd shape but more then anything we had numerous costumers coming back again and agian for these tasty mild onoins. Torpedo have become my family's favorite on the grill. PLEASANT VIEW, CO

Love the shape and flavor of the Tropea onions. They did very well this year in my garden in Seattle, and some got quite large. Only one year, when Dixondale said they had poor crop performance, did they wimp out on me. But this year they are back and better than ever.(2010)

My husband's family is from southern Italy, and they grow this onion there. We have had excellent success growing them, and loving sharing them with friends.

Tried torpedo for 1st time. Difficult growing year for many things in eastern MA. Torpedo was a good, moderate size (4-in long; 1.2-in dia) with few runts. Don't really like the thick necks which are persisting after harvest.

Grown in northcentral PA. This is a really great cooking onion, but plants are variable year to year. Great onion in 2006; crop failure in 2007; grew very well in 2008 but many subdivisions within each bulb. Start eating early, they do not store past Christmas.

The better quality of your Tropea Torpedo Onions in 2008 became the most popular onion I offered for sale at the Watertown Farmers Market last summer. I sold out well before the season ended. Some onions grew to a far larger size than in previous years - some reached a length of over 7". Wonderful variety. I plan to at least double my planting of this one in 2009.
